Seminars and workshops
Seminars and workshops are a big draw for those serious students of
architecture. They realise that these are the most academic efforts
of the convention. The topics range from sustainable development to
spatial synthesis and sculpture.
29th Dec
A workshop on spatial synthesis by Ar. Anil Bhaskaran: It
was an exercise for a group of students ending with a debate and feedback
session.
A workshop on interior design by Ar. Alex Jacob: It began
with a talk on furniture and organic materials with the architect exhibiting
some of his work. Then there was a student exercise.
Seminar on interiors and impact of services on interiors
by Ar. BH Rathi: this was basically a talk accompanied by a slide show.
A sculpture workshop by Mr. John Devraj: This was a steel
skeleton with chicken mesh, covered by the students with cement and
later clad with broken tiles.
A seminar on sustainable development by Ar. Anupama Kundoo:
It was a slide show of her works and a talk on the various alternative
systems and technologies that can be applied to make architecture sustainable.
A talk by the University of New South Wales: It was about
further education and living in Australia especially in New South Wales.
30th Dec.
A painting workshop by Mr.Ravikumar Kashi: The idea was
to carve on thermocol cubes with cutters and sandpaper and then paint
them using acrylic colours.
An Ikebana workshop by Ms. Geetha Bhat: This was split into
two. The first slot was a demonstration of flower arrangements for various
occasions while the second slot had the students working in groups.

relief by Ms. Vrinda: The talk was accompanied by a slide show with
emphasis on stress relief.

Workshop on origami by Ar. Satish Rao: this was a demonstration
which concluded by students creating various forms with laminate boards.
There was a panel discussion on ' Designing for the disabled'.
This was held in tandem with a panel discussion on the same topic. It
was chaired by Javed Abidi, Prathibha, Ramakrishna and Telang and was
moderated by Prof. Rajan and Vibhavari.
On the Spot competitions
The On the Spot competitions and events were co-hosted by BMS College
of Engineering. The venues had names like Void G1, Vicious Greens and
Deccan Plateau and served to confuse people on that sprawling campus.
They were all design oriented ranging from 'K-house' which involved
in the making of an irregular and chaotic house to 'Do It In' which
was painting inside a beer bottle to making a dismantleable bridge and
cantilevered structures or compositions from waste materials to the
bizarre hairstyles and costume making events. IAB hosted a cover design
event. SAP, Chennai won the most number of events and were given a citation
for the same.
Cultural events
The cultural events as is usual in any student gathering were the real
crowd pullers. The variety of events showcased the talented, the entertaining
and the creative on the first day there was the Host Show which had
Bharathnatyam, dances, a fashion show and Kalaripattu all performed
by DSCE. The next day saw the Rock Show which opened with the band-
'God's Own People'. The main course was 'Dreadlocks' a band from Calicut.
On the third day, there was the inter collegiate cultural event. This
provided the most colourful show of the convention- it had plays, dances,
songs, fashion shows and what not! This ran well into the next evening
where it ended in the New Year Eve party and a what a massive jamming
session that was! The dancing went on till morning- around bonfires
which had smaller groups all huddled together. An occasion that most
students will remember!
