Moshe Safdie is an Israeli-Canadian architect known for his innovative and human-centered designs. His architectural philosophy emphasizes functionality, sustainability, and integration with the surrounding environment. Safdie gained international recognition with Habitat 67, a modular housing project in Montreal, and has since designed several iconic structures worldwide.
One of his most famous projects is Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, completed in 2010. This integrated resort consists of three 55-story towers connected at the top by the SkyPark, which features an infinity pool, gardens, and an observation deck. The design was inspired by stacked playing cards and aims to create a dynamic, open space that blends with Singapore’s skyline.
Materials Used in Marina Bay Sands
Safdie used a combination of advanced materials to achieve the structural complexity and aesthetic appeal of Marina Bay Sands:
Steel – Used for the SkyPark's framework and cantilevered sections, providing strength and flexibility.
Glass – Large glass panels enhance natural light and provide panoramic views while maintaining energy efficiency.
Reinforced Concrete – Forms the core structure of the towers, ensuring durability and stability.
Aluminum and Composite Panels – Used for exterior facades to reduce weight while maintaining a sleek, modern look.
Sustainable Materials – Recycled materials and energy-efficient systems were integrated to align with Singapore’s sustainability goals.
