Palinda Kannangara is a Sri Lankan architect known for his minimalist and context-driven designs that blend seamlessly with nature. His work is deeply influenced by Sri Lanka’s tropical climate, vernacular traditions, and a focus on sustainability. He often incorporates raw, locally sourced materials to create spaces that are both functional and poetic. His projects emphasize openness, natural ventilation, and a strong connection between indoor and outdoor environments.

Materials Used in His Projects
Kannangara’s architecture is characterized by the use of:

Exposed Concrete – A signature element in his designs, offering durability and a raw aesthetic.

Brick and Terracotta – Used for walls and flooring to provide warmth and a tactile quality.

Timber – Locally sourced wood is used for doors, windows, and furniture, adding a natural touch.

Steel – Often integrated for structural elements and detailing, maintaining a balance between strength and lightness.

Natural Stone and Gravel – Used for pathways, landscaping, and sometimes as flooring, enhancing the organic feel of his spaces.

By using these materials, Kannangara creates architecture that is deeply rooted in Sri Lanka’s landscape, culture, and climate, making his work both sustainable and timeless.

One of his most famous projects is Marina Bay Sands in Singapore

Moshe Safdie is an Israeli-Canadian architect known for his innovative and human-centered designs. His architectural philosophy emphasizes functionality, sustainability, and integration with the surrounding environment. Safdie gained international recognition with Habitat 67, a modular housing project in Montreal, and has since designed several iconic structures worldwide.

One of his most famous projects is Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, completed in 2010. This integrated resort consists of three 55-story towers connected at the top by the SkyPark, which features an infinity pool, gardens, and an observation deck. The design was inspired by stacked playing cards and aims to create a dynamic, open space that blends with Singapore’s skyline.

Materials Used in Marina Bay Sands

Safdie used a combination of advanced materials to achieve the structural complexity and aesthetic appeal of Marina Bay Sands:

Steel – Used for the SkyPark's framework and cantilevered sections, providing strength and flexibility.

Glass – Large glass panels enhance natural light and provide panoramic views while maintaining energy efficiency.

Reinforced Concrete – Forms the core structure of the towers, ensuring durability and stability.

Aluminum and Composite Panels – Used for exterior facades to reduce weight while maintaining a sleek, modern look.

Sustainable Materials – Recycled materials and energy-efficient systems were integrated to align with Singapore’s sustainability goals.
